E-Bike Guide for Older Riders: Staying Active Safely
Some of the most rewarding conversations we have in our shop are with riders in their 60s, 70s and beyond - people who thought their cycling days might be behind them, only to discover that an e-bike can hand back the hills, the distance and the freedom.
If that sounds like you, or someone you love, this guide is for you.
Getting back on a bike later in life can be a brilliant way to stay active, spend more time outdoors, socialise and regain a sense of independence. And with the right e-bike, it can feel genuinely comfortable, manageable and safe.
Why an E-Bike Changes Everything
One of the most common worries we hear is:
“I'm not fit enough anymore.”
The good news is that an e-bike meets you exactly where you are.
Pedal assist gives you a helping hand as you pedal, which means the hill that once ended your ride can become a gentle roll, and a headwind no longer has to be the enemy.
You're still pedalling. You're still getting exercise, moving your body and enjoying the fresh air. The difference is that you get to choose how hard the ride needs to be.
Many of our returning riders actually find themselves riding more, not less, because the effort finally matches the enjoyment.
Confidence and Balance Come First
If it has been a while since you've ridden, rebuilding confidence is the first step — and that's completely normal.
A few simple things make getting started much easier:
- Start somewhere flat, quiet and forgiving. The driveway, cycle paths, lakefront or open area is far better than a busy road or steep hill while you're getting comfortable.
- Begin in the lowest assistance level, such as Eco. This keeps the bike feeling calm and predictable. You can add more assistance as your confidence grows and you get used to the equipment.
- Practise starting and stopping. Spend a little time in an open area until putting a foot down and getting moving again feels automatic. This will help hugely with confidence in handling the ebike while you are getting used to the motion.
- Give yourself time. Confidence usually comes from repetition rather than pushing yourself too quickly.
At Electric Bike Rotorua, we're happy to spend time with you before you head off, getting the bike set up and letting you practise at your own pace – we’ll even come out with you or set you up on one of our rental ebikes found at the Rydges Hotel Rotorua Site.
There's no rush and no judgement. We are a welcoming team, keen on sharing the ebike smiles - helping nervous or returning riders find their feet is one of our favourite parts of the job.
Choosing an E-Bike That Suits Your Body
For most older riders, comfort, confidence and easy handling matter far more than outright performance – you possibly don’t need the most powerful motor on the market, but if you want to have it and taper the torque down to your liking then we can help with that too.
The right ebike can make an enormous difference.
A step-through frame is one of the best features for later-life riding.
Instead of having to swing your leg over a high top tube, you can simply step through the frame and sit down.
This can make getting on and off the bike much easier, particularly if your hips, knees, flexibility or balance aren't quite what they used to be – or just for easy dismounting if you stop-and-start a lot on your rides.
Upright Riding Position
A relaxed, upright position can reduce pressure through your:
- Wrists
- Neck
- Shoulders
- Lower back
It also gives you a comfortable view of the path ahead and makes everyday leisure riding feel much more natural.
Stable, Predictable Handling
A well-balanced e-bike should feel planted and reassuring rather than twitchy.
Battery placement, frame design, tyre size and the overall weight distribution of the bike can all affect how stable it feels underneath you. This is something we discuss and explain in-store when helping to match the right e-bike to the rider.
Comfortable Controls
Your brakes, gears and assistance controls should all be easy to reach and simple to understand.
If a brake lever feels like a stretch or the controls are fiddly, those things can often be adjusted.
The bike should fit you - not the other way around.
Getting the Size Right Matters
Correct sizing and set-up are essential.
A bike that's too large, too small or badly adjusted can feel unstable and uncomfortable regardless of how good the bike itself is. Fit is everything.
That's one of the main reasons we recommend trying an e-bike in person rather than buying one sight-unseen online.
A proper test ride lets you check:
- Whether getting on and off feels comfortable
- Whether you can reach the brakes easily
- Whether the bike feels manageable at low speeds
- Whether the riding position suits your body
- Whether the assistance feels smooth and predictable
Sometimes a small change in frame size or riding position completely changes how confident a bike feels.
Setting Your E-Bike Up for Comfort
Small adjustments can make a surprisingly big difference.
Saddle Height
Your saddle should be high enough for comfortable pedalling, but many returning riders also appreciate being able to put a foot down confidently when stopping.
We can help find a good balance between efficient pedalling and reassurance. We can even install a remote dropper post in our workshop for you if the ebike you choose doesn’t already come with one.
Handlebar Position
Your bars can often be adjusted so you're sitting comfortably rather than reaching forward or hunching your shoulders.
Brake Lever Position
Brake levers should sit naturally underneath your fingers rather than forcing your wrists into an awkward position.
Tyre Pressure
Tyre pressure can also affect comfort and ride-handling.
Running appropriate pressures for your weight, bike and riding conditions can help smooth out small bumps and make the bike feel more planted.
We fine-tune these things as part of setting up a bike properly, and we're always happy to adjust things again if something doesn't feel quite right.
Comfort is worth getting right.
Riding Safely and Staying Active
Once you're comfortable on the bike, a few simple habits can help keep riding enjoyable and sustainable.
Choose Friendly Routes
Start with routes that suit your confidence level.
Flat, sealed and lower-traffic paths are ideal while you're getting used to your new ebike. Rotorua's lakefront and easier trail networks can be great places to build confidence before tackling longer or more adventurous rides.
Build Up Gradually
You don't need to prove anything on your first ride.
Start with shorter distances and gradually increase them as your fitness and confidence improve.
Let the Motor Help
That's what it's there for.
If you're getting tired, increase the assistance level and let the motor take more of the load.
An e-bike allows you to stay active without every ride becoming an endurance test or a chore.
Think About Your Battery Range
Plan rides that suit the battery capacity of your bike and your chosen assistance level.
It's often better to finish with some battery remaining than to push things too far and find yourself a long way from home without assistance – Trust us on that one – we do a lot of ‘finding the limits’ on ebikes here in Rotorua.
If you're unsure, ask us about realistic range for the kind of riding you're planning – or check out tools like the Bosch Range Calculator to get a gauge before you head out.
Carry the Basics
Bring:
- Water
- Your helmet and some gloves
- A windbreaker for changeable NZ weather
- A charged phone
- Any personal items or medication you normally carry when exercising
And most importantly, ride within your own abilities.
The goal is to stay active and enjoy the experience, not to overexert yourself.
Try Before You Decide - Hire an E-Bike First
Our best advice for anyone considering an e-bike later in general is simple:
Hire one for a day or take a relaxed test ride before committing to buying.
Spend some time on the bike.
See how manageable it feels – what you do and don’t like.
Try a gentle hill.
Practise stopping and starting.
Feel what happens when the motor gracefully takes some of the effort away.
For many people, that's the moment the penny drops.
Suddenly, riding doesn't feel like something they used to do. It feels possible again.
